Facebook-owned Oculus is a leader in virtual reality innovations. Its latest update for iOS, v29, includes some cool new technology.
Virtual reality is often thought of as something used by gamers. Not too long ago, we discussed that VR has other uses, like training in healthcare and other industries. But during the pandemic, consumers have increasingly used VR as an escape. Facebook took advantage of this last year when they released the Oculus Quest 2 headsets. An improved version of the original Quest, the Quest 2 received rave reviews. Always looking to improve and innovate, Facebook recently announced some pretty sweet updates and upgrades set to roll out with the v29 software update.
Oculus’ v28 software already included some cool new features, like Air Link, which allows users to play VR games through their PC without wires, 120Hz support and updates to Infinite Office. This latest set of updates and feature additions applies only to iOS users, but Android support is coming as well. The new updates include:
- Bringing Multi-User and App Sharing to the original Quest, something given to Quest 2 users in February. This feature allows multiple accounts to be used on the same device. Each user only has access to their own information and notifications, there’s no information sharing.
- A new Casting feature that lets you superimpose your real-world self over your digital world. The feature is called Live Overlay, simply put your phone on a flat surface and aim it at yourself while casting, or enlist someone to hold the camera for you. In addition, when Casting to Web or Recording, the built-in microphone can now record your voice in-the-moment. Content creators can record their gameplay and commentary at the same time and upload to their favorite website.
- Infinite Office features. By enabling iOS notifications in the Oculus App Settings, lock screen notifications will appear in your headset. This allows you to see important information without removing the headset.
- A Files App. Located in the app library, the files app enables you to access, browse, manage, share and upload files from your headset across multiple locations in VR.
- New Passthrough shortcuts. The v29 update includes a Passthrough Home “eye” icon on the Quick Settings menu which allows you to toggle between VR and your real life surroundings.
- Developer Support. Oculus plans to begin testing ads to promote Oculus content. With so many apps available, the goal is to tailor ads to user preferences. This gives developers higher visibility and discoverability and provides users with a personalized experience.
Use of virtual reality headsets is increasing all the time. While not necessarily practical for businesses to provide to employees for remote work, there are definitely ways it can be helpful in our current situation. It’s also important to remember that Facebook’s Oculus isn’t the only company that makes these headsets. Before purchasing one, it’s important to compare all of the features, settings, security and content available. Make sure that what you’re buying is what you need!
