More and more user accounts are being compromised and misused. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwvconsultants.com\/blog\/twitter-hacker-a-17-year-old-amateur\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Twitter attack in mid-July<\/a> was perpetrated by a 17-year old amateur who, along with two others, has been charged with some 30 felonies. There was a ransomware attack on fitness app brand Garmin, which caused users devices to be shut down for a couple of days. Over the last few days, two new attacks have come to light: YouTube and Reddit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The YouTube attack has actually been going on since at least July 29, when Chilling Tales for Dark Nights made it known that their account was attacked. On August 6, Jon Prosser of Apple tweeted out that his account was hacked, 2FA was bypassed potentially due to a SIM card swap as he and his team no longer have access to the channel. YouTube\u2019s response? Fill out a form and wait. These accounts are live streaming Bitcoin scams to the account subscribers. Prosser tweeted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Channel hacked. 2FA bypassed. <br><br>Live-streaming a Bitcoin scam to 40,000 live viewers. <br><br>Hackers have made $4,000 in Bitcoin so far. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TeamYouTube?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@TeamYouTube<\/a> tells me I need to fill out a form and wait \u201ca few weeks\u201d. <br><br>If any ACTUAL YouTube reps see this, please get in contact with me. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/s276Wp1LAt\">pic.twitter.com\/s276Wp1LAt<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Jon Prosser (@jon_prosser) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jon_prosser\/status\/1291162451833225216?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 6, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>Prosser is clearly not happy with YouTube, and as of 8\/6, Chilling Tales for Dark Nights was still waiting on next steps as well. Esports commentator Rod Breslau <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imore.com\/youtube-experiencing-egregious-bitcoin-hack-no-one-fixing?utm_source=im_tw&amp;utm_medium=tw_card&amp;utm_content=68630&amp;utm_campaign=social\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shed some light on the situation<\/a> as well, \u201cFrom talking to YouTubers these stolen account bitcoin scams have been going on for months and way longer than the recent Twitter hack, YouTube has yet to address the problem, and they&#8217;re making people wait weeks to get their account back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">happening right now: several large verified YouTube accounts have either been bought or hacked, have had their names changed to &#39;Elon Musk SpaceX&#39;, and are currently live streaming with tens of thousands of viewbotted viewers the same bitcoin scam we saw on Twitter weeks ago <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/oahqZze4oc\">pic.twitter.com\/oahqZze4oc<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Rod Breslau (@Slasher) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Slasher\/status\/1290491490313965579?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 4, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>YouTube\u2019s response team is under serious fire, or will be if they aren\u2019t yet. Yes, these things take time to investigate, but there is absolutely no reason those accounts should continue to be active. Cutting off access to the affected accounts is the first step to stopping the hack. It will force the hackers to attempt to get other accounts, which could lead to mistakes and getting caught.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Reddit attack happened on Friday when a number of subreddits were compromised. Hackers reportedly posted messages or changed a subreddit\u2019s design to show support for President Donald Trump. \u201cAn investigation is underway related to a series of vandalized communities,\u201d a Reddit spokesperson said in a statement to\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/8\/7\/21358898\/reddit-subreddits-trump-communities-vandalized-compromised-moderator-accounts?fbclid=IwAR0fi665DP1DVYViFG7c6lVNw7CnmigVyWeTp9CuRD-Zfd851hzSUPxrqdo\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Verge<\/a><\/em>. \u201cIt appears the source of the attacks were compromised moderator accounts. We are working to lock down those accounts and restore impacted communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Right now it is not known how the accounts were compromised, but there is a post on r\/subredditdrama which listed some of the subreddits that were affected. The list includes r\/CFB, r\/food, r\/Japan, r\/nfl and more. The subreddits appear to be reverting back to normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past, we\u2019ve talked about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwvconsultants.com\/blog\/securing-data-with-multifactor-authentication\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the importance of MFA and 2FA<\/a>, but in these cases it appears that even those processes were bypassed. This just goes to show the importance of a strong and unique password, something else we have discussed at length. If you cannot come up with or remember a variety of unique and strong passwords, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwvconsultants.com\/blog\/password-managers-keep-your-information-secure\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">consider using a password manager<\/a>. A password manager can create strong passwords you don\u2019t even know and save them in a safe place so you don\u2019t have to remember them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With social media attacks on the rise, it is becoming more clear that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwvconsultants.com\/blog\/keeping-up-with-hackers-changing-tactics\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hackers tactics are indiscriminate<\/a>. Information is their form of commerce, it\u2019s what they use to get money in their pockets. Bitcoin scams help, too. Don\u2019t fall for Bitcoin scams. Use strong passwords that are unique to each website. Use 2FA or MFA when you can, even if hackers somehow bypass it, it\u2019s an added layer of protection. It is becoming more and more evident that everyday users must protect their information or risk becoming a victim.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Social media hacking is on the rise in a disturbing new trend.
