Startups and new businesses that have been around for less than six years should be built in the cloud, but many are not. These businesses resist the cloud for a few misguided reasons. They think it\u2019s going to cost more, they won\u2019t have access to their data, they\u2019ll be locked in with a provider, or they\u2019ve here or seen an attempt to build in the cloud go wrong. Let’s debunk these reasons for the cloud-phobic.<\/p>\n
Myth: It’s going to cost more<\/strong><\/p>\n The thought that the cloud is going to cost more is just incorrect. There\u2019s no other way to put it, it\u2019s just not true. When building a business, there are always initial costs. The same goes with the cloud, there\u2019s going to be an initial cost. But at the end of the day, the cloud is going to save you money, especially when starting out. It allows for almost everything to be automated, it\u2019s secure by default, it\u2019s compliant, and it doesn\u2019t require paying a developer to maintain. There are built in protections against would-be hackers, protecting your company\u2019s sensitive data. Any cost incurred by using the cloud, if set up properly, is going to be vastly less than not using the cloud.<\/p>\n Myth: I won’t have access to my data<\/strong><\/p>\n There is a thought that you don\u2019t have access to your data, or that you need to back it up somewhere else. But with the cloud, you most definitely have access to all of your data. Where you used to back up that data on various hard drives kept in the corner of your office, now S3 storage backs up your data for you. It\u2019s already doing what you think you need to handle as part of the cloud\u2019s automation. You want to upgrade something, that\u2019s a hard thing. Even with the cloud, those things are hard and they take time. That doesn\u2019t mean you are locked in and \u201cstuck\u201d with a provider. If you are going to move from one server to another, it takes time. The same goes with transferring from one provider to another. The things that are currently hard are still hard, regardless of cloud usage, but in no way are you stuck.<\/p>\n Myth: The cloud won’t work for my business<\/strong><\/p>\n This perspective comes from companies which have attempted to build in the cloud, but because they viewed cloud migration as lift-and-shift they failed to reap any benefits or worse, made things worse. This happens when a company tries to hand off the migration to IT or development staff who have no experience with the cloud. The cloud novice sticks with what they know, which is get a server and virtually throw it on a rack. They treat the cloud like any other data center. They don\u2019t use services, they don’t maintain it, they don\u2019t update it and it\u2019s not scaled for growth, so you run into problems because it\u2019s basically been set up exactly how it was set up previously. Which begs the question, if you are going to do exactly what you were doing, why migrate? And why expect different results for the identical approach. New businesses and startups often don\u2019t know what they don\u2019t know, and when they hire someone without the proper knowledge to set up their cloud services, it can be disastrous.<\/p>\n The reasons businesses can be resistant to the cloud all boil down to one thing: lack of knowledge about the cloud. The cloud is the most cost effective, secure, efficient and convenient way to run your business when it\u2019s approached with knowledge.
